Swish by Han 647-343-0268 http://swishbyhan.wordpress.com Lunch Mon-Fri 12pm-2pm, Dinner Mon-Sat 5pm-1030pm
A table, a burner, a pot and some Soju is the key to a good meal at this authentic Korean resto. The lunchtime atmosphere is boisterous, fun and packed with Toronto’s workforce. During the day they don’t take reservations so come early to snag a table. Servers are helpful and very attentive.
Diving right in I start with “Mandoo” dumplings, house stuffed with Berkshire pork and chive fried until perfectly golden crisp. Next “Ssäm Bbap” lettuce wrap platter delights my palette with sizzling tender smoky pork, onions, mushrooms and carrots. Kimchi trio includes authentic, spicy sweet field cucumbers with pineapple and a vinegary sour cucumber version that’s reminiscent of warm spring day. “Dolsot Bi Bim Bap” mixes crispy rice, vegetables and seafood then topped with a quail egg all in a hot clay pot. The dish looks to be so filling but is quite delicate, colourful and has a great texture. My favorite dish is the swish beef soup cooked tableside by a portable burner. The soup virtually comes to life right in front of your eyes, only a few drops of hot sauce needed.
A cold crisp beer is the perfect accompaniment to rich savory dishes. Delirium Tremens soothes the palette with floral and citrus notes served in a pink elephant patterned glass nicely balances. Flights of Soju give a wicked buzz especially when infused with citrus and cucumber.
The prices are a little high but portions are rather large and everything tastes home made. If you are looking for a new fresh lunch spot this is the place – serving really honest, really good food.
