Union Social Eatery

The bare wood tables and large floor to ceiling windows make references to a rustic wood cabin, but this ‘sauga eatery is more like a social after-work hangout, with bubbly servers and an international menu.  Its lunchtime and the room is buzzing with the areas business residents.  The menu is a mix of American, Thai, Korean, Japanese and Mexican in generous serving sizes.

To start a pomegranate margarita (with fresh pressed limes and pomegranate liqueur) is disappointing and a little on the sweet side; definitely not fresh pressed limes, not a pulp in sight.  Caesars are garnished with pickle, onion, cherry tomato, pickled ginger and crisp fatty bacon – divine!  The wine list holds more than a few gems – the velvet devil being one of my personal favorites.   An order of hand-cut Parmesan truffle fries tossed with thyme and rosemary finished with white truffle oil are almost perfect, needing only and order of garlic aioli.  I wanted to test the restaurants rolling skills so I ordered the Social Dragon Roll: crunchy shrimp, avocado, spicy mayo and molasses-soy glaze.  The roll dazzles with the right amount of crunch and spice.

Nachitos made with house fried corn tortillas are simple yet tasty, topped with tomatoes, zesty jalapeño Monterey jack cheese, and fresh house made salsa.  House-smoked mesquite wings coated in chipotle butter (or mango B.B.Q) is disappointingly soggy.

The verdict: I would come back again –  if I was in the area.

ABOUT ME

I have lived in Toronto my whole life. I'm first generation German/Polish. My obsession with food began when I was young, watching my parents cook dinner, helping with barbeques. I try a new restaurant every week and I love to travel. There isn't anything I wouldn't try or do. I love sharing all my food adventures!
