The Jerk Joint 647.748.7011 Mon to Sun 11am-9pm www.jerkjointtoronto.com
Situated in the newly renovated Queen West Market, The Jerk Joint is not your average fast-food stop. Hungry office workers on their lunch pile into this off-Chinatown space for wallet-friendly and belly-filling home-style Jamaican options. The menu is larger than most and having just recently opened just everything is not available yet – like the fried chicken – which I can’t wait to try. Warning: the dishes you are about to experiences are hot, very hot.
Today I’m having smoked jerk pork with white rice and coleslaw. Fatty cubes of pork tangled with onions and a smoky flavour that blazes with heat, lucky the zingy coleslaw cools with a creamy finish. Similarly the jerk chicken is aromatic, loaded with spice and draped in a rich brown gravy, served with rice and peas. Coco bread is pilowy-soft, lightly sweet and the perfect instrument for mopping up that leftover gravy.
Lastly the jerk chicken wings served tips-on (my favorite way) are by far the hottest dish of the afternoon, having to breathe in and out quickly just to cool my mouth. I’d love to come back when things are a little more settle; and to pick some fantastic house-made hot sauce. It’s not overly spiced just flavourful, and the fiery colour is nicely balanced with ginger and fragrant herbs.
