Well it’s that time of year again and what better way to spend it than kicking off the summer with iYellow Wine Club in Liberty Village. Niagara wines are becoming a strong force in the world of winemaking and this years event brings together some of the brightest stars from Southern Ontario. We began at Origin Restaurant, where a small crowd of foodies and media were invited to try unique vintages from the wineries from Niagara-on-the-Lake. Most of the wines are available for purchase from the vineyards in limited amounts.
Joseph’s Estate Wines http://www.josephsestatewines.com/ are always an excellent value and this year its a 2002 Cabernet Franc Icewine – rich with notes of honey and apricot. Jackson-Triggs http://www.jacksontriggswinery.com/ brings us a charming fruitful 2000 Vidal, balancing acidity into a silky finish. Pondview Wineries http://www.pondviewwinery.com/ 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon doesn’t disappoint having a sexy ruby red colour, notes of creamy vanilla and chocolate leaving a long finish on the palate.
Trius Winery http://www.triuswines.com/ capures the local terror of Niagara wine country, showcasing an exclusive Red from 1991 seduces us with silky tannins, black currant and a deep ruby colour. Inniskillin http://www.inniskillin.com/Niagara produced a stunning golden 1993 Vidal Icewine – notes of caramelized stone fruit. Lakeview Cellars http://www.diamondestates.ca/canadian-wines/alphabetical-listing/lakeview-cellars brings a sultry-sweet port-like 2001 vintage Starboard with hints of red berries.
Cheteau des Charms http://www.chateaudescharmes.com/1993 sparkling wine surprises with smooth creamy bubbles. And last but not least Cattail Creek’s http://cattailcreek.ca/ 2006 Late Harvest Vidal reminds me of late summer evenings, sitting on a porch swing letting the aromas of dewy flowers invade my senses.
The cheeses accompanying these gems were supplied by Cheese Boutique http://www.cheeseboutique.com/ – one of the best delicatessens in Toronto. Each cheese was carefully selected to complement each wine and that it did. Click on the images to see a close-up description of the cheeses. Crisp flatbread dusted with fresh parmesan crumbles apart and is wonderful to nibble on along with a sticky roasted nut mixture and spicy mixed olives.
