This little spot is just up the street from my parents house, and has had a few owners over the years. I’ve heard good things about this place from my family so I decided to check it out. Many people unfamiliar with Thai cuisine seem to order Pad Thai, however I find Pad Woon Sen much lighter and more flavourful. Stir-fried tiger shrimp, chicken, onion, green onion, mushroom and egg ($9.95) is silky, glass noodles melt in the mouth and have a hint of smokiness. A colourful mango salad ($7.95)fresh with ripe and under ripe julienned mango, crushed peanuts, toasted cashews and sliced red onion, hints of earthy sweetness and a umami-like dressing. I’m disappointed with the dry under-seasoned Pad Thai ($9.95). I know it’s takeout but I still don’t think the noodles should be stuck together in a tight clump. They do have another version of this dish that uses tamarind sauce, it might be better but I won’t hold my breath. Deep fried marinated chicken wings ($7.95) are slimy and taste like they have been baked – so boring.
My mother and sister both rave about this place but I have no idea why. Maybe I tried the wrong dishes? But I’m willing to give it another shot, only because it’s local and affordable.
