Toronto Food Fest http://tofoodfest.com/
Summer has begun and so has one of the most exciting food festivals. Admission is always free and with food items priced $10 and under one is almost able to try it all – appetite willing and all. I arrived fairly early this year because last year the event got packed very quickly. Some of the vendors featured here are well established, others have just started out or just cater events, and some roll around the city in food-trucks. But what everyone has in common at Toronto Food Fest is there love for FOOD! Out of the many I have selected a few to look out for in the near future, and a couple that already are stars on their own.
Starting out with Lamesa’s Filipino Kitchen www.lamesafilipinokitchen.com. Fresh lumpia all made from scratch so delicate and fresh. Halo halo is a marvel of textural contrast with bright colours and unique red-bean kinda taste.
Cold tea from Marathon Cafe is robust – a must for your mornings. Fatty pork skewers retain moister and flavour (its actually much harder than is sounds). Likos Hawaiian BBQ http://www.hawaiianbarbecue.ca/ grilled right in front of you.
Grub’s https://www.facebook.com/grubto chicken yakitori mingles chicken skin and gizzards on a skewer sided with shrimp chips for a offal-ly good indulgence. Gushi www.gushiisgushi.com means skewer in Japanese, and they make some of the juiciest fried chicken around topped with garlic mayo for the ultimate guilty pleasure. It tastes amazing, and the best part is its available in vendor form on Dundas between Bathurst and Spadina.
The last two bites I had before I almost exploded were among the best. Buster’s Sea Cove wraps up the tastiest fish and octopus tacos and serves them around town off their food truck and right out of St. Lawrence Market. And an incredibly filling, yet healthy Portobello Burger from www.theportobelloburger.com.
I was lucky to get in and out before the lineups started. One word of advice for the organizers next year: a seating area with tables and chairs would be to enjoy the tasty treats from the afternoon.
