The third location of the Playa Cabana Empire is gorgeous. Located on the corner of Dupont and Avenue Road this three level resto is a gem. The sounds of a of a good time hit you like a wave as you walk through the door. The crowd is young and worldly, for the most part: hipsters and Topshop playsuits who see the delicious irony in economical Mexican fare served in the heart of Yorkville. Neon signs, loud live music and some of the best late-night nibbles in town create a contagiously happy vibe. I love the second floor patio, it almost gives the feel of an old Victorian house. Service varies from polished to rough at the edges.
A fresh salsa verde $5 is very green, timed lightly with spice that hits you at the end. Mahi ceviche $9 exemplifys the kitchen’s successful use of high-impact flavour (and generous additions of lime juice). Chorizo pulpo (octopus) $6 drenched with raw poblano salsa is a delight. Fried scallops “Cenera Frita” $6 on a soft taco topped with toronja salsita and pickled jicama is exceptional.
Zucchini blossoms “Flor de calabaza con queso” $6 must be eaten hot; otherwise the rich Oaxaca cheese becomes rubbery. Langosta Asada $9 (can sometimes run out, so order asap) served on a crisp tortilla with garlicky lobster roe is an absolute knockout – next time I’m ordering five!!
With standout Margaritas, this place spanks out a good time.
