When Evan Clifford says he’s going all the way, he goes all the way. From the soy sauce to the wild sockeye salmon to the brown paper and plastic bags, it’s all environmentally friendly to the extreme. Every single piece of fish that is sold at Just Sushi is 100% ocean friendly, making responsible seafood choices that contribute to keeping our oceans healthy. If that doesn’t make you want to eat here I don’t know what will.
Though focusing mostly on takeout and “room service” for the area residents, Clifford created a small, but much needed patio overlooking the beautiful Lake Ontario – can’t wait till summer.
Diced yellow fin tuna and bay scallop tartare $12 hits the palate with tropical fruit, then peppery jalapeno soothed by an aromatic Arbequina olive oil sided with taro crisps fried in virgin coconut oil. Non-GMO Ontario grown edamame $3 are delicate and slightly sweeter than their Japanese counterparts. Double rainbow roll on organic white rice surprises with Dungeness crab, lime juice, cucumber, avocado, striped bass, yellowfin tuna and wild sockeye salmon. I love hand rolls so I made my own – spicy mayo, crunchy tempura with red spring salmon $7. Salmon roe nigiri $7 is briny at first then turns into creamy bliss. An atypical seaweed salad looks beautiful – Canadian hanatsunomata, Japanese hand harvested wakame, hijiki seaweed, watermelon radish, heirloom carrot, dried mango, kuro toasted sesame seeds, micro-mizuna served with a tamari-balsamic dressing – however, something is missing in the wildly exotic mix.
At first I was scared of the caprese roll (cherry tomatoes, local buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil, drizzled with aged balsamic, olive oil, rolled in a non GMO soy wrap) but then the familiar unexpected taste drew me in, and the more I ate the more I loved. The finish a-not-so-cool chilled gluten free/lactose free “tai’o sweets” made with walnuts, dates, honey, bee pollen and coconut – kinda hard to eat, falling apart as I take a bite. Finally, an imported straight from Japan 152 mg shot of unsweetened, no calorie all natural Catechin green tea loaded with antioxidants (I woke up the next morning craving this), its a good thing.
