Inside the aroma from the grill hits me like that first touch of tropical air when the planes doors open after a long needed vacation – mmm, I missed this. Mint coloured tiles mix with white walls and oversized spherical lights giving the room that diner feel while Latin bets playing in the background. The menu is mainly Cuban, influenced by Canadian seasonal ingredients. A small wine and cocktail list is very affordable.
Habanero glazed fried squid $7 is to die for! Light flaky batter, only held together by the fiery glaze, is nicely done, really a delight. Fluffy, sweet battered conch frituras $6 – though not what I expected – are quite lovely. The pressed cubano sandwich $9 steals the show: buttered house baked bread, molasses Dijon roasted pork, Chipotle mayo, gherkins and Gruyère cheese. Having just a touch of acid, La Cubana’s red cabbage slaw $3 is perfectly balanced; something so simple I find on many occasions is often saturated with vinegar. The place has a happy vibe, something that the Roncesvalles community is becoming known for and I’m so glad I can call this area home. I’ll be back for sure!
