I attended the grand-opening of D.W. Alexander, formerly The Foundation Room. Owners Jamil Kamal and D.W. Alexander with over 20 years in the hospitality business, wanted to pay homage to the venue’s history, naming it after its original tenant, D.W. Alexander, the largest sole-leather trader in Western Canada who launched his leather business back in 1872. And what they have created is a softly lit lounge that feels like Yorkville, but kinda casual with Queen West vibe.
A winding staircase leads me down into a warmly lit room filled with old friends from the restaurant/industry. This chill spot’s bar menu specializes in rye-based drinks created by mixologist Aaron Beaudouin to calm the stresses of the working world. Next, a few items from the snack menu slowly make their way around the room, created by executive chef Sean Simon (Goods & Provisions) using all local Canadian-made ingredients. A small taste of the menu: buttery ocean trout over pumpernickel bread, fried shredded potato fritters, bacon infused popcorn and a smoky pulled bison sandwich.
I had a great time, however I think I need to explore more of the menu. Touch base with me in a week or so to get the full lowdown.
