The interior is stark, very Canadian hockey/dive bar. Chef Trevor Wilkinson modeled the menu around bar food he really enjoyed while hanging out at a local bar with friends. Most items are meant for sharing and when one takes look at the mouth watering selection one really feels like ordering everything. It’s more of a casual after work spot than a dinner destination, however the dive bar meets gourmet menu theme is an exciting trend I’m seeing and enjoying growing in the industry.
The evening Is loaded with favourites: crispy foie gras with ice wine concord grape jelly, sea salt fries with a fantastic malt vinegar, big eye tuna carpaccio (coriander, shoyu mayo, crispy shallots, and scallions – tastes like sour cream and onions), pickerel goujons (think fish n’ chips) with a ridiculously rich lobster tartar sauce, tempura shrimp with an explosive spicy mayo and a black river cheddar, double smoked bacon grilled cheese sandwich sided with a buttery tomato soup.
Still, when everything else is so close to perfect, this odd failing can be forgiven; white rock chicken wings taste warmed from a frozen store bought state. The ambiance sucks, the liqueur is basic, but the food is the definition of satisfaction. Its a theme I’m begining to notice – complex food with a simple bar or a complex bar sided with a simple food menu – love it.
