The space has been stripped of all its kitschy character (Eastern Legend), but the new natural lighting floods the room with sunshine and the intoxicating aromas of Iranian home cooking. The facelift has created a warm, neighbourly vibe. The name, Kadbanu, which translates into “lady of the house”, was inspired by the title of a Persian cookbook that has been passed down through the family for three generations. Friends, family and food bloggers fill this corner spot adding a touch of ceremony to the newest edition to the Banu family. Owner Salome Mohyeddin tells me the menu is based almost entirely on her grandmother’s recipes, created by the heart and executed with skillful care. I’m definitely coming back for dinner on the corner patio!
Cocktails are on another level: exotically spiced watermelon, white wine, vodka and a fresh cucumber based vodka. Every dish at this Kensington local is well made and carefully considered: Mirza, roasted auberginewit, fried garlic, tomato and fried egg; Gheymeh, split pea stew with beef; earthy roasted beet salad; ; watermelon Salad with feta, watercress, fennel, radish and yellow beets; mint, yogurt sliced tomato; shakshuka egg bread in a spicy tomato sauce; mini kofteh meat balls; smokey eggplant; stuffed dates; chilled corn soup.
