I love wine, but I love scotch whisky even more. iYellowWineClub invited me and a few lucky club members to a private tasting of The Glenlivet, a special place in Speyside. Translated from Gaelic, the name means ‘valley of the smooth-flowing one’. Here are a few interesting facts:
- There are a total of 15 stills in the distillery.
- Ancient stone from the old malt house was used to construct parts of the new distillery building.
- One of the most environmentally friendly distilleries in Scotland.
- 60-80% of the flavour of The Glenlivet whisky comes from the cask – or casks – in which it matures.
Tonight we taste 4 superb years of age with suitable pairings: dry roasted nuts and grainy firm cheddar with 12-year-old the “smooth and welcoming one”, shortberad cookies with 15-year-old the “bright and lively gold”, sugary dried fruit with A’bunadah, and finally dark chocolate smoothly melts with 18-year-old balanced and elegant one.
