This place is totally vibing. I am not the fondest of the “hot dog” culture but always willing to try something different – at least once that is!. Located at the northern edge of Chinatown at Spadina and Collage, Let’s be Frank is licensed and has a menu packed with variety of items including vegetarian options that taste like the real thing. And there is even a patio in the back – it does not get better than that! Let’s Be Frank uses ‘Nathan’s Famous Beef Franks’ and ‘Silverstein’s’, a local bakery, for buns. This place is a must try if you love a good wiener.
We sampled seven items off the very versatile menu. Starting off with a pulled pork po’boy topped with juicy pork, tangy homemade coleslaw, Dine Alone Foods Northern Soul BBQ sauce and hickory sticks! Up next is a panko coated deep-fried Katsu dog, drizzled with wasabi mayo, katsu sauce and green onions. I think I’ve only had one corn dog in my life, so this carnival classic is a treat. This frank is dipped in a special recipe corn batter, fried to perfection, served with BBQ sauce for dip. The vegetarian version of this corn dog is so good, you can’t taste the difference, however the texture does give it away.
Hot dog wings are an interesting spin. Breaded, fried and tossed in buffalo sauce, these little delights are even sided with carrots and celery, and your choice of ranch or blue cheese dip. Other items which not hot dog related are available, you just need to look a little further into the menu. Items like the creamy, sharp, slightly dry, tossed with bacon bits Mac & cheese, and the delightfully rich hot dog gravy poutine comprised of crispy Yukon Gold fries, topped with squeaky cheese curds and signature hot dog gravy.
