Located on the edge of Roncesvalles, the unique cement grey exterior, narrow rectangular windows and large medieval door festooned with wrought iron caught my eye. Inside the decor is on another level: a cool modern glow warmed by wood, brought to life by little statues and trinkets hidden throughout the restaurant. Make sure you explore. Love the communal seating, black lit fish tanks with faux jellyfish, colourful porcelain skulls… I could go on and on but that would spoil the surprise. Nine kitchen + bar has only been open for about a month and it already has stolen my dark little heart.
A heavily spiced Soju sangria is an interesting spin on the “norm” – not quite sure I’m digging the cinnamon-clove blend. I did, however enjoy the freshly-pressed-mint-infused Soju Mojito with a touch of soda. Ontario beef tartar is dressed heavily in sesame oil, but that does not matter because the diced pear and sliced garlic (as odd as it sounds) saves the dish.
Glass noodles tossed in a sweet, softly balanced soy dressing with spinach, red pepper, and carrots – a must have! KFC 3 (Korean fried chicken) – lightly dusted and oh so crackly tossed in sweet soy sauce and garlic – another winner! Uber crisp little pieces mixed in with juicy dark meat – perfect for the dark meat lover sided with pickled, delightful.
