Located at 70 Yorkville Avenue, just down the stairs is 70 Down. This is one of those revolving locals that change every few years. Not really sure why, but sometimes walking down a flight of stairs in 6 inch heels can truly be, a killer.
Tonight the food was incredible. Aromatic spices and exotic fragrances fill the room and add a sort of mystic to the place. I love the combination of local modern being paired with traditional Mediterranean dishes, which serves to elevate each cuisines individual – yet surprisingly complementary flavours. The price points are a little high, but you’re in Yorkville and the quality and service are top notch.
Inventive cocktails flood the bar menu. Love that! (But) They do take a bit to make… Like the 70 Southside (Tanqueray gin, fresh lime juice, housemade cucumber syrup, peppermint bitters, cracked black pepper), and the Cyn Cyn Sour (Bulleit Bourbon, amaro, cynar, fresh lemon juice, orgeat syrup, egg whites, chocolate bitters). Or this other secret espresso beans cocktail…. you have to ask for it.
The food is simple but complex. Mini Joojeh: organic free-range chicken skewers marinated in saffron rubbed in fresh micro herbs (a little dry). Fish tacos are never worth the hype. Well, I’ve never had a memorable dish. Until i tried the mini Moroccan halibut tacos; freshly made right down to the tortilla’s topped with pico de gallo and garlic pesto – delicious !
Ontario lamb is divine, and much less gamey than you think; rubbed in a zesty lemony olive oil lemon, rosemary, and thyme. Bolani is a type of flat-bread originating from Afghanistan. Here homemade dough is stuffed with creamy potato, caramelized onions, moosear and fresh thyme.
Beef and onion dumplings in a garliky tomato sauce are called Montu, not the biggest fan but I did like that they where drizzled in yogurt. Halloumi cheese is one of the most versatile cheeses out there and one of my personal favorites. This evening it’s seared and placed over Shirazi, which is a traditional Iranian salad: cucumber, tomato, onion and lemon juice. Loved it and this resto – there is definitely something special in here – looking forward to another visit soon 🙂
