Located 17 and a half feet under street level in the heart of The Financial is a new private social club called the Wine Academy. The space is beautiful! My first thought was that this “Wine Academy” was going to be small and secretive spot but when I reached the bottom of the stairs I was floored. It’s HUGE! This 6000+ square foot, two story space has a cellar that can hold up to 105, 000 bottles of wine – consisting of 1,122 individual and separately keyed personal storage lockers, each that hold up to 92 Bordeaux style bottles!
I found out that this space was previously a gym in the 80s and 90s. Interior designer Roksena Nikolova worked collaboratively with Architect Elias Ampas to complete the space aesthetic. The beautiful, rawness of the foundation was transformed into a more modern-industrial meets classic look. One of my favorite contemporary decors is the contrast of industrial unpolished metal and wood against raw brick.
And it gets better! Chef Aaron Joseph Bear Robe (previously Keriwa Café) heads up the kitchen while in-house sommelier Natalie Pope helps pair your wines with the fabulous seasonal menus, highlighting the flavours of the Mediterranean. Oh, and there’s also charcuterie and cheese plates to enjoy.
I really love the idea of having a space that’s both cozy and professional, where you can store your own wine to entertain friends, clients and colleagues. 24/7 access is available with personal or corporate memberships. Being a blogger I go to a lot of networking events and find this space exciting. If you’re in the downtown area I suggest you drop in and take a look around.
