Toronto residents were among the first in the country selected to preview Pazazz, an all new winter apple variety descended from the popular Honeycrisp. Pazazz, the next national apple sensation, has been in careful development for nine years and will be unveiled nationally in 2018.
“Toronto residents really know their apples,” says Don Roper, vice president sales and marketing, Honeybear Brands. “We’re eager to hear just what they think about this unique and incredible apple variety that, unlike most apples, is grown to peak in flavor during the months of January and February when many other apple varieties begin to loose their just harvested taste.” Harvested in late fall, Pazazz stores exceptionally well and provides a crisp and intense burst of sweet and tart flavors all through winter and into late spring. It is grown by family run orchards up and down the Mississippi River Valley as well as in Washington, New York and Nova Scotia.
“Pazazz is very new but already shattering all our expectations,” adds Roper. “We’re introducing the variety this year in carefully selected markets known for their love of apples and fresh fruit. And we’ll be taking on board all the feedback we get from our retail partners and their customers before Pazazz reaches full maturity in 2018 and is introduced coast to coast across North America.”
My family and I sampled this new variety. We had a little tasting party and discovered apples are like wine; each has it’s own fragrance and complex aromatic flavours. The Nova Scotia Pazazz are juicy, crisp, sweet, floral, has a very firm texture and a skin so delicate: like the two become one.
Washington and New York apples have more of a Macintosh flavour; softer, tart and sweet – more on the sour side – the skin separates a bit when chewed.
Awesome apples are grown from both orchards! We, however, preferred the apples grown in Nova Scotia because the texture is crisper and firmer. Both are good but our favourite is the Pazazz grown on the East coast in Canada.
Pazazz is the star of Honeybear Brands varietal development program, which is headquartered in Elgin, MN where the company started as a family orchard in the 1970s.
