I went to this spot with a group of friends. This is the only official Guu in Toronto. The other Guu’s that we came to love were bought out by franchisees and renamed, Kinka Izakaya. Though they are both extremely similar with regards to their menu and ambiance, there are slight differences. The official Guu Izakaya now resides on Queen West (Parkdale) and still has the same interior vibe: wood, stone, a boisterous local crowd, open kitchen, and a very traditional Japanese pub atmosphere.
Fun with a group of friends or a first date. It’s so busy and the menu is all about sharing small dishes. Daily specials are always sided with the menu. We start with takowasabi (my favourite). This dish clears the sinuses and awakes the senses – ask for soy sauce and extra seaweed wrappers. Next deep-fried spicy calamari arrives soaked in a ketchup-like substance – not a fan.
Marinated JELLYFISH salad is SOOO good! Crunchy cartilage blends acidity with smoky glass noodles and a hint of heat. Black cod is fatty, creamy and rich with umami. A dish that one can not do wrong.
Large oysters with mayo and are a signature dish for Guu, served piping hot covered with cheese. I’m obsessed with beef short ribs; love the fatty charred edges and sweet/savory flavours with garlic and green onion.
