Having not attending an event in quite some time, it was nice see old friends again at the opening of Dessert Lady Bakery and Café in Yorkville.
This is the second location for owner Mandy Han – the first is more focused on catering. The new location is tucked away on Sultan Street (a block south of Bloor), inside a beautiful historic house which has been transformed into a two story café with a small front patio.
Blogger mom and I attended the opening. Of course she arrived before anyone else to take some great shots of the space before the rest of the friends and foodies arrived. Inside the house has been kept as close to the original, decorated mostly with cakes, cookies and coffee. Cut Coffee is an ever-changing espresso blend focused on freshness and sweetness and available here – my mom LOVES it!
As the cocktails were passed around and the DJ played cool beats, the evening was really centered around choosing a new tacos to add to the menu. Each taco had its own business card and ballet box to which one would cast a vote. The box with the most cards won a spot on the menu!
And the choices were:
Portobello mushroom & Chimichurri
Pulled duck & mango with cilantro
Guess who won??
The PULLED DUCK! I voted for the mushroom because it tasted garlicky and earthy – AND I just haven’t seen a mushroom taco before. Have you?
Also, during the evening one of the fabulous cake creators was working her magic. Throughout the evening a cake was being built step-by-step for all to see. The gorgeous creation would be raffled off at the end of the night – yes, the night just kept getting better! First step above, next below.
Sadly, @BloggermomPOL and I did not win. However, we had such a fun time at this fantastic event in one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Toronto!
